Seth’s World View

Life Lessons from Battlestar Gallactica

Tonight I watched Battlestar Gallactica: Razor, and remembered why this is my favorite TV series of all time. One of the reasons why I like science fiction is that it tends to grapple with real life issues in a more challenging way than genres based in the present world we live in. In being free to create alternate realities, they provide a framework where we can address ideas.

The main theme tonight was about leadership. Over the past year or so, I’ve been learning about making decisions. I am slowly moving from being indecisive and to decisive, as I worry less about making the right decision, and am finding it more important to make a decision and move on with my life. I read a post from Seth Godin where he talked about ‘hard work.’ In his explanation, hard work used to mean spending extra time and labor at our chosen vocations. In a land of office buildings, hard work means making hard decisions. Being a leader, means making hard decisions. It means putting oneself out there and taking a stand, because a decision has to be made, and not always knowing whether it’s the best decision or not.

I thank the writers of Battlestar Gallactica for exploring what it means to be a human being, for asking tough questions, and for showing multiple sides of what it might mean for answer them.
