False Kingdoms

I just wrote a post on my new blog at ChristianImagination dot Com, about worldly systems. Our pastor, Darren preached on James 4 today. I just wrote the following to him:

“I’ve been frustrated this weekend in dealing with systems, business politics, clients, singleness, and such. I’m struck at the moment at how I (and others) get the idea that God is supposed to give us the things the worldly system says we should have, and then if God doesn’t deliver (like He’s supposed to, according to the formulas we’re taught), then faith and trust become really difficult. I struggled with faith and trust today, but at the moment, I have a glimpse of His upside-down kingdom, and feel a bit of comfort. “

In reality, it’s not the false system of the world that’s the problem here, but the false system within American Christianity where we are supposed to have faith that God will provide according to this world’s value system. I suppose it was the same in Jesus’ time, religion supporting the dominant culture’s value system in some ways, condemning it in others. We’ll support our President on issues of personality morality, but will overlook his lack of humility and materialism. Maybe one day I’ll break free and learn what it means to be me, happily.
