College students and ministry

I went to Messiah College, Christian Liberal Arts college back in Pennsylvania. I finished with a degree in Speech and Radio Communications, and a minor in Family Studies. While there, I was involved with staff from both Campus Crusade and the Coalition for Christian Outreach, being heavily influenced by the latter. I considered going on staff with Campus Crusade and applied to the CCO. After I graduated, I lived nearby Messiah for a year, and maintained a fair amount of connection. I moved out to Colorado soon after and was a part of The Rock, a student and singles church, for 4 years. Though I was part of the working singles team, I still knew quite a few college age students. When I went to New Zealand, I went to The Street City Church and was part of a small group of mostly college students. Now, two years after returning, I’m at Everyday Joe’s and Timberline Oldtown, surrounded by college students. I like the young adult stage of life, maybe because there’s a desire for growth, learning, and a certain idealism that is oft lost later on. There are many I know though, in all stages of life, who are lifelong learners, which is cool. Not sure what stage of life I’m in. I’m not a young adult, despite the fact I look like one. I tend to dislike the excessive categorization of people into demographics. People are great. One cool things I am finding about swing dancing is how so many differences fade away on the dance floor. It reminds me of the various team-building activities at camps that are designed to get people comfortable with each other. So it’s interesting to see myself and some in my small group dancing some lately. I suppose I’ve always been the kind to blend into different social strata. I don’t like being locked into a demographic or class or age or subculture.

All that to say, I really like my small group and everyone in it. I love the diversity, and the dialogue, and the oneness. It’s great to have a bunch of college age adults, a married couple, a few post college, and someone who has grandkids. It’s wonderful. It’s the church. It’s the way it’s meant to be, and it’s beautiful.
