Direction
Rich Mullins had heard of the concept of a spiritual director, and decided to seek one out. He moved from Nashville to Wichita, Kansas at the height of his career to be with someone he that could fill that role in his life. A spritual director, as I remember it, is an older Christian who serves as a spiritual mentor of sorts and a sounding board. After all these years, I’ve decided that I like my independence and like being able to serve in a number of capacities for the greater good. But I also am realizing I often don’t have a clue. The downside of making one’s own decisions is that I can easily overwhelm myself, not pace myself, and not get the proper feedback on what I am doing. I don’t always know my own heart, or even who I really am. I make most of my own decisions every day, with some prayer, and sometimes asking others, but often not. I’m tired of making all my own decisions. I do need to seek God’s wisdom more, but I also need to seek the wisdom of others more. So, the concept of a spirital director who can reflect my life back to me sounds very appealing. Finding an older person who understands people like me and who has the time, well, I don’t know where to look. There is a side of me that wants to be consumed in fulfilling endeavors. There is also a side of me that wants to quietly connect with others and smell the flowers. That perhaps is the best summary I’ve ever written of myself.
