A Cup of Coffee for the Soul

Ah, after 12 days of being coffee-free due to my cleansing diet, I finally get to partake of the hallowed bean once more. Ordered a 12 oz low-fat decaf hazelnut latte. Now for the rationale. I really don’t need 20 oz of coffee, or even 16 oz, though the 16 oz has just as many shots of espresso. 12 oz does cost less. I like Soy Milk, but I prefer it more added to brewed coffee than as part of a latte. Soy has a fairly strong flavor. I prefer Rice Milk, not that any coffeehouses have it, as it is fairly smooth and light. I admit that fat does taste good, and I am equally happy using whole or skim in most instances (though it’s been years since I’ve had a glass of cow milk straight). With coffee, whole does taste better, and half-n-half definitely adds more flavor than skim. I can do skim as part of a latte though. I’ve tried sugar-free hazelnut, and it just isn’t good. While both hazelnuts are synthetic, the one with sugar tastes far better. It really comes down to the coffee bean. Everyday Joe’s uses high-quality coffee from Stumptown Roasters in Portland. I will have gone two weeks before having caffeine this month (that would be tomorrow). It’s been awhile since I’ve had decaf, and as I partake of this cup of coffee, I remember the words of a former coffee house manager who said that “decaf coffee was already ruined.” So true. I’d rather not drink coffee than drink ruined decaf coffee.

Nevertheless, it’s still coffee, and after almost two weeks, it’s a pleasant experience.
