A Ship Called Serenity

I like Science Fiction, a lot, always have. I lived a year without the Sci-Fi channel, it was difficult (okay, I can live without it, but it’s nice to have). I like how science fiction explores reality, yes, reality, and often does a better job than so-called ‘real life’ shows (we won’t even get into the unrealness of reality shows). While science fiction shows are often based on great ideas or concepts, execution is often B-quality at best. Not many shows draw you in, and even fewer have 3 Dimensional characters. That’s actually what I like about the new Battlestar Gallactica. It’s a good idea that is well-developed with good writing, good acting, and many layers. The characters are harder to define though, because they don’t always make the same choices, and grow through their experiences. That’s rare in Sci-Fi. I also watch Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, which have one of the cooler gimics, and have developed it really well. The show has it’s flaws, but I do care about the characters and am interested in who they are.

The focus here though is Firefly and Serenity. I actually don’t go to the movie theatre often unless I REALLY want to see something. I like to think I am on aware of the good sci-fi TV shows and movies. I know a few of my fellow bloggers really liked Serenity, and it’s been on my list of movies to see, but in reading reviews, it made me wonder about a TV series I never heard of called Firefly. So I thought, a lot of people liked the series, and it’s sci-fi, so might as well check out the series before watching Serenity. Very, very addictive, engrossing show. Possibly the best sci-fi series I have seen, among the best TV shows I have seen. Only to be cancelled after 14 episodes… This, from the creator of Buffy and Angel, shows with some similarities, but vastly inferior (in my opinion) in concept and believability and storyline. I can now be counted among the fans of Firefly, and the guys who think Kaylee is cute and Inara is hot (between the two, I like cute, feisty one). Now, must…..see……Serenity. Netflix says looooooong wait. Must buy, must borrow, must rent…Serenity, I will find you!!!!!!
