Idols

Had a cold or flu the past few days, so have been rather out-of-commission. Have had some time to think…and to play Tiger Woods Golf. God’s reality is really cool. Even with paradigm shifts, it’s possible to get down, though not as far. My value comes from God, not my perception of the world’s standards, or even the Christian world’s standards. Been thinking about idolatry. Idolatry is a word without force in today’s language, so I’ll call it something else: worshipping false gods. We often look to our gods for value. When I look to my culture, people, a girl, or anything else for my value, often it is because I am setting those things as an idol, a standard wholly-unrelated to God. Though I have tried this before, I am planning to spend the next 3-4 months spending very little time with the various media (TV, movies, Internet, music), because to varying degrees, these things are often distractions, sometimes idols, that can make me focus on things other than God. Primarily, I’m less concerned about the bad things, because the bad are more easily recognizable. What concerns me is when I watch a movie and I start judging myself by the world’s value system or when I spend time on the net doing pointless stuff when I might otherwise give someone a call. If these things facilitate friendship, then that’ll be okay, but I need some more time just to allow my mind to be renewed (Rom. 12:1-2). Ah, perfection is so far off. His name is Jesus, and through Him, I am perfect enough to be with God, and one day, my spirit and a perfect body will be there.
