Mu
I’m reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintence. Years ago, I thought this was a book about Zen, some wierd religion I wanted nothing to do with. Well, the book isn’t about Zen specifically, or necessarily motorcycle maintence, though there are threads throughout the book. I just read about the concept of mu, which is in a state of ‘unasked.’ So often in our Western (Greek) dualism, it is a choice between between 2, either or, 0 1, true false, yes no. There are only two sides, ours and theirs. I think ‘mu’ is on to something though. Life isn’t so simple, God isn’t so simple. Maybe that’s why we have the concept of trinity…it’s more complex than dualism. There often is a 3rd way, or 3rd state of being. I could explain it, but I won’t. Either it makes sense to you or it doesn’t. I find myself trapped in a world where there is the Christian way and the other way, or the 2 Christian ways, or whatever. I try to follow the rules of our chaotic pop culture and also unimaginative Christendom and end up in a confused dispair, unable to cope with the world. I then remember that I don’t have to be defined by culture. Culture shouldn’t be thrown out, it’s important, but many aspects of the various cultures don’t work for me, and I’m tired of lamenting how sadly I fit the mold. The mold isn’t meant for me. Let others fit the mold. I’m going to break free of the mold and just be what I’m created to be. Culture be damned!
