Sunset Horizon

I could swim to the other side,
if I could see past the horizon,
to where earth and sky meet,
if I knew the waters would hold me,
and not break.
Waves
overtake those who push
too far, too deep.
The wet sand beneath my feet
is a shelter to me, a solid
foundation for the castles
in my mind.
Perhaps
one day, the sun will gaze upon
the wind blown waters,
and stare them down to dust.
Or the moon trick them
into a lowering of their guard.
Only then will I venture in.
As thunder
bears down on my solitude,
my sanctuary falls,
and I must face my own frailty.
Though I am king over this land,
it could be swept away, and I alone will be left.
Gazing
through a circle of glass, I discover
new ways to see. The stars,
the story written in them is love and war.
The ancients used them for navigation, as will I.
Standing on the bow of a ship, captain’s wheel
in hand, I will steer through the lakes and oceans.
Traversing the whole globe if I must, with
only a sextant and an old map to guide.

But first,
I must learn to swim.
